I know, your thinking "What a dump!" And you would be correct. But this is one of the most useful, awesome dumps on the planet. The Machine Shop. The place where they do all kinds of useful, random things for cheap. Sharpen blades (almost any kind of blade),cut keys, fabricate missing metal pieces, weld things (open or shut). They will come and fix a flat for you and they do other basic car repairs, they can also work on your tractor but strangely, not your lawn mower. Most people pay cash for the services here and they'll gladly take your personal check but they don't take any plastic. They don't have a website or even signage and you would be hard pressed to find them even in the yellow pages. But it doesn't seem to matter, everyone seems to know who they are and where they are.
It's a deceptively large space inside, stretching the entire depth of the building. It's dark and dungeon like and there are no windows except for the ones you see at the front. When you walk in the front door you can see the vines growing through the windows, working their way around the frame and climbing the walls.
But don't let the creepy and decrepit exterior fool you, this place is teeming with business, every single day. They provide full time employment to local people. The old guys working there learned most of their skills by hands on experience and old fashioned mentoring. That's how they now train the younger guys working under them. They serve the unique needs of the community around them and they have been in business more years than I can remember.
You won't find a better example of a "Mom and Pop"business anywhere.
