Oh, hello! What's this? Another snake, only a different kind of snake and this time I caught it on camera. It was about 3 feet long, but not nearly as big around as the black one I saw, this was more long and skinny. It was very pretty.
This is NOT a Copperhead, even though it appears to have a coppery sheen and the marking are similar. It's a common mimic, either a Mole Kingsnake or a Corn Snake and the reason I keep getting closer and closer is because I already know it isn't poisonous. You can tell by the shape of the head - see:
See how the head is spoon shaped and relatively smooth? In Copperheads and other poisonous snakes, the head is enlarged at the sides (the venom glands) and near the nose glands in front (for heat/prey seeking ability) and this snake has none of that. It wasn't that timid either, just kind of chilling out after the rain stopped yesterday. But then it got tired of the camera and decided to head back down into it's secret snake base, which is under a tree in the front fence row. These snakes kill rodents so it's more than welcome to stay as far as I'm concerned.
Long live the snakes - and turtles.
