I'm starting to lose my adoration of these things. They are all over the place and yeah, they only live for a month but they hatch continuously all summer. They are loud and big and they are flying all over the yard. They hit you in the head, they land on your clothing and they crawl up your legs. They don't bite and they are totally benign as far as bugs go but still...gross!!
This particular batch has taken over the pear tree in the garden and when you approach the tree they make a loud noise in unison that sounds like a giant rattlesnake. The pitch can reach a point it actually hurts your ears. I'm not joking, there are that many. They are quite a delicacy on the food chain as almost everything eats them. Snakes, rats, possums, raccoons, coyotes, pretty much everything that eats bugs consider this a tasty treat.
I think you get where I am going with this, where goes Cicadas.....
