The horse is badly overdue for a brushing. She's blowing her winter coat and the layers are starting to itch and irritate her. I notice she had rubbed a clean spot on her stomach all on her own by finding a strategically located tree branch and rubbing it off but the rest of her coat was out of reach and bothering her.
I grabbed her grooming bucket, a small bribe in the form of an apple and headed out into the mud with my new trusty mud boots. She was completely cooperative (after the apple) and I proceeded to brush...and brush....and brush...until my arm got tired and she was getting bored by it all.
After 45 minutes I had succeeded in clearing only a small portion on her back! Although the birds were happy about the large area rug made of horse hair that was lying on the ground. We'll repeat this process over the next couple of days, giving her a break when she gets tired. Once it's all off, her coat will pretty much take care of itself until next spring.
Maybe I should build a special brush post for her when we redo the fence around her pasture. Hmmmmmm...
